Among various types of reverse osmosis membrane contamination (microbial contamination, fouling, particulate, and colloid contamination), microbial contamination poses the most significant risk to membrane systems. It leads to the most severe operational difficulties in reverse osmosis water treatment. As water and wastewater reuse applications increase, the problem of microbial contamination in reverse osmosis systems is becoming more challenging and apparent.

Our TBC bactericides for membrane systems are safe, broad-spectrum, non-oxidizing biological inhibitors. These products have a strong penetration ability into microbial cells and can decompose and destroy microbial cell tissues. This ability allows them to powerfully kill and effectively inhibit the growth and attachment of microorganisms in the membrane system, membrane surface, and pipeline. As a result, they reduce the pollution of the reverse osmosis membrane and significantly extend its service life without causing any damage to the membrane elements.

Operating Instructions

Transfer the non-oxidizing bactericides into the dosing bucket. Customers can also dilute them with water based on their specific needs. Using a metering pump, the agent should then be added in front of the security filter. Dosing can be done in two ways: continuous online and online shock dosing.

Online continuous dosing: Inject the chemical continuously before the security filter, using a concentration of 2.0 to 10.0 ppm to control bacterial growth. This method is primarily suitable for cases with a high presence of microorganisms.

Online shock dosing: Inject the solution before the security filter or ultrafiltration system. The initial dose should be high, between 100 and 300 ppm (depending on the product), until a noticeable control effect is achieved. The impact dosing duration is 30 to 60 minutes per session, with the number of sessions determined by the system’s level of contamination. Customers can also consult Membrantec technical staff to determine the specific dose.

System Maintenance Sterilization: Prepare a non-oxidizing bactericide solution at 200 to 500 ppm (depending on the product) for system maintenance sterilization. Use a cleaning pump to introduce the solution into the system and let it soak for 60 to 90 minutes. Then, rinse with RO product water for 15 minutes to remove more than 99% of microorganisms.

Please note that before soaking the RO membrane with a non-oxidizing bactericide, the membrane should be acid-washed to remove any metal hydroxides that may be present on its surface. After soaking, use an alkaline wash to remove the carcasses of organisms and any organic residue.
